Wegmans Food Markets, Rochester, N.Y., launched three new omega-3 breads. The 68-store chain is one of the nation’s first supermarkets to offer breads fortified with omega-3s, the healthful fatty acid found in fish oils. Omega-3s are being added to the breads in a powdered, microencapsulated form, which keeps the oils fresh, allows for good absorption in the body and eliminates any fishy flavor.
Wegmans’ 100% Whole Wheat, 12 Grain and Very Low Sodium breads with the fortification contain 80 to 90 mg of omega-3s in two slices. (A 3-oz. cooked serving of salmon has about 1,400 mg of omega-3s.)
Interest in the health-giving properties of omega-3s has grown since studies have shown that these fats may combat heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, cancer and perhaps even mental illness.
The omega-3 breads are priced at $1.99 a loaf, and are available at all 68 Wegmans stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia.
