Chocolate chip remains cookie king

October is National Cookie Month, and a survey shows that chocolate chip is the clear favorite.

The country may seem divided these days, but there is one thing that everyone agrees on: chocolate chip cookies.

A recent survey showed that Americans prefer chocolate chip cookies more than three to one over all other varieties. Nearly 53 percent of adults polled named chocolate chip cookie as their favorite. Peanut butter came in a distant second, with 16 percent giving it the nod. Oatmeal cookies garnered 15 percent of the vote, and sugar and shortbread cookies tied for fourth at 11 percent. The remaining 5 percent answered “other” as their favorite.

The survey, commissioned by Downton Cookie Co., New York City, was conducted in August by Impulse Research and released in recognition of National Cookie Month, which began Oct. 1.

Of the 1,033 men and women polled, chocolate chip cookies were the clear winner regardless of gender, politics, age and region.

“There are a lot of fancy cookies out there, but across the board, across the country, people still prefer the authentic, original chocolate chip,” says Dan Guerrera, founder of Downtown Cookie Co. “They want the real, homemade flavors they grew up with.”
