Shirley Ryan Rose, longtime Modern Baking cake decorating writer; and Larry Powell, Ryan Rose’s former student, will be recognized on April 25 during an awards banquet for the 2009 Washington State Cake and Confectionary Show, held at Little Creek Casino, Shelton, Wash. The Washington State Sugar Artists/ International Cake Exploration Societé (ICES) and Oregon ICES created the award this year to honor  pioneers in the craft.  Ryan Rose and Powell will be guests of the Washington State Sugar Artists at the event, and will be recognized for their service to the cake decorating and sugar arts industries.

The Washington State Sugar Artists, a group of cake decorators, pastry chefs, and sugar and chocolate artists, host monthly meetings and sponsor an annual cake show. The Washington State Cake and Confectionery Show showcases the talents of the group's members.
