Bakeries part of campaign
A side dish or dessert, for example, needs to meet two of the following three criteria: 250 calories or less, 8 grams of fat or less, or saturated and/or trans fat make up no more than 1/3 of total fat.
"The criteria are reasonable to still allow for chef creativity," said Erica Bohm, Healthy Dining's vice president. "It represents improvement over what's typical in terms of fat and calorie content of most restaurant meals." Restaurant meals average 1,000 to 2,000 calories and 50 to 100 grams of fat, according to Bohm.
Web visitors will be able to search for operators by location, price range and cuisine. Categories of interest to bakery operators might include: bakery, bagel shop, breakfast/brunch, deli/sandwiches as well as a listing of ethnic categories. Featured products with whole grains also are encouraged.
HealthyDiningFinder registered bakeries and restaurants will list: names and descriptions of four to ten menu items with corresponding nutrition information, address and phone number for all locations, your logo, a descriptive paragraph about your bakery or restaurant and optional links to your Web site.
A national consumer marketing campaign is planned to launch the Web site in June, said Bohm. For more information about signing up with the Web site, e-mail Erica Bohm at Erica@healthydiningfinder.com or visit www.healthydiningfinder.com/demo.
