Paradise to double its cafe numbers

The announcement comes months after Panera Bread Co. bought a majority share in Paradise to grow its presence in the region rather than compete head-to-head with the established chain’s local following. Paradise said it would begin expansion by adding 20 stores during the next six months, primarily in Arizona.

Paradise Bakery President Dan Patterson founded the bakery in Southern California in 1976 and opened his first store in the Phoenix area in 1987. The chain has a similar product line to Panera Bread with soups, sandwiches and bakery products, but Paradise bakery cafes have a more extensive product line and distinct brand image in its store design and restaurant operations.

“We’re not looking to Panera-ize Paradise,” said Patterson in a published statement.
