Cupcake bakery chains expand again
Last month, Modern Baking reported that Magnolia Bakery, the bakery often credited with beginning the cupcake craze, was opening its first location outside of New York in Los Angeles. Now, it plans a global expansion. Owners Steve and Tyra Abrams announced plans to open a new location in Dubai on Feb. 10, according to the New York Post.
Another cupcake institution also is expanding. Candace and Charles Nelson, owners of Sprinkles, The Original Cupcake Bakery, Beverly Hills, Calif., announced they will be opening a location on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, the city’s famed shopping district, in March 2010.
“Ever since we were featured on Oprah in February 2006, we’ve felt a special connection with Chicago,” said Candace Nelson in a press release. “Chicago has led our online poll for the next Sprinkles location for the past three years. It has taken some time to find the perfect spot, but we are incredibly excited to finally bring Sprinkles to all our fans in this great city.”
The Chicago location will be the company’s sixth store in addition to the Sprinklesmobile, a mobile cupcake truck, which operates in Los Angeles.
