Fortune lists top 100 employers

Fortune magazine released its annual list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For,” and several supermarkets made the list.

The highest-ranked was Wegmans Food Markets, Rochester, N.Y., at No. 4. The supermarket chain was chosen because it’s “made employee health a religion: More than 2,000 workers have enrolled in a free smoking-cessation program since 2009; this year it opened a new 24/7 health hotline,” according to Fortune.

Whole Foods Market, Austin, Texas, was once again named to the top 100 list. Ranked No. 32, the natural and organic supermarket is one of only 13 companies that have made the list every year since its inception in 1998. Fortune cited equitable pay structure as one of the reasons Whole Foods Market again made the list.

Woodland, Calif.-based Nugget Market at No. 34, as its “checkers [still] make $17.71 an hour here, well above the industry average, and health insurance is free even for part-timers if they work at least 24 hours a week.”

At No. 78, Publix Super Markets, Lakeland, Fla. was recognized for being “the largest employee-owned company in the nation,” where “employees get generous annual stock infusions.”

Other retailers who appeared on the list included Starbucks, at No. 73, while Minneapolis-based consumer packaged goods giant General Mills at No. 63, Starbucks at No. 73, and The Container Store at No. 22.
