Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co., Myrtle Beach, S.C., opened its restructured grocery store design last month. The company says the unique design incorporates advanced refrigeration systems and other technologies to arrange food items based on how customers naturally shop.

Fresh, frozen and canned vegetables and fruit, for example, are in the same location. One stop stations offer complete meal solutions with items such as ground beef, hamburger buns, chips and beer grouped together for backyard grilling. The new store features a full-line in-store bakery and deli, which are positioned in their own dedicated departments. Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. operates more than 60 in-store bakeries that have demonstrated particular success in the company's upscale format, which it operates under the Newton Farms banner.

“In today's competitive market, we felt it was time to take a creative approach that will give people the opportunity to shop the way they think and have fun while doing it,” said David Schools, Piggly Wiggly C.E.O. in a company press release. “When you enter the Piggly Wiggly at the Market Common, you don't see check out lines. You don't go down five aisles to get ingredients for one meal. We've even added interior design elements including wood flooring, soft lighting and an open floor plan to make it feel like home.”

Additional store features include prepared meals available for curb-side pickup, an on-site sommelier and nearly 1,600 natural and organic products. Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. has more than 115 stores in South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina.
