Los Angeles-based SusieCakes will open its first Northern California location in Marin at the Bon Air Shopping Center in January. The bakery is known for its home-style, all-American desserts.
“Friends have been begging me to open a Northern California Susie-Cakes for years, and I can’t wait to provide the community of Marin with a neighborhood bakery like the kind I grew up with,” said owner Susan Sarich. She opened her first bakery in Brentwood three years ago and has since added locations in Calabasas, Newport Beach and Manhattan Beach.
The newest location will feature the bakery’s signature seafoam-green walls, vintage posters and black-and-white photographs for a retro-chic atmosphere. Large windows allow customers to view a portion of the production area and watch as the bakers put the finishing touches on the desserts.
The desserts are based on Sarich’s grandmothers’ recipes, and the most popular cake flavor in the bakeries is Susie’s Famous Southern Red Velvet, a deep red, moist cake lightly flavored with cocoa and topped with cream cheese icing. The signature Frosting-Filled Cupcakes are available in vanilla, chocolate chocolate, Fluffy Coconut, Luscious Lemon and peanut butter varieties. Every month, the bakery creates a seasonal cupcake of the month, such as strawberry-white chocolate or pumpkin spice.
