Sweet Shoppe Bakery founder dies

Jim Sloop, founder of Sweet Shoppe Bakery, High Point, N.C., and a former RBA president, died Feb. 1 in High Point, N.C., of complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was 95 years old.

Sloop co-founded the Sweet Shoppe Bakery in September 1946 with his sister Ruth Sloop Atkins. The bakery continues to be operated today by his daughter, Judy Cagle, her husband, Ken James, and their son, Ken Cagle, Jr.

Sloop also served on the governing board of the National Retail Bakers Association for eight years and served as president from 1983 to 1984.

Sloop is survived by his wife, Helen Motsinger Sloop; his son, James H. Sloop and wife, Cassandra; his daughter, Judy S. Cagle and husband, Ken James; six; seven great-grandchildren; along with many nieces and nephews.

The funeral took place Feb. 5 in High Point, where Sloop also was born.
