The Upper Midwest Bakery Association’s (UMBA) third annual Ultimate Cake Decorating Competition was held last month, and Cheryl Romanowski, Sweet Memories, Thorpe, Wis., won the Halloween monster cake category. She was awarded tuition, airfare and hotel accomodations for a five-day decorating class at Julie Bashore’s School of Cake Decorating in Lancaster, Pa. Laura Englerth and Teara Myers, Lunds/Byerly’s, Bloomington, Minn., won $1,000 for their entry in the Fantasy Wedding Cake category.
In the Halloween category, Robyn Hanisch, Hanisch Bakery and Coffeeshop, Red Wing, Minn., placed second and Gretchen Canada, Central Market, Bismarck, N.D., was awarded third place.
For the wedding cake competition, Monica Iverson and Allison Hoyne, Cakes by Monica, Vermillian, S.D., placed second and third went to Katherine Anderson and Jody Franek, Byerly’s, Eagon, Minn.
