The Upper Midwest Bakers Association has announced the winners of the 5th annual Ultimate Cake Decorating Competition, which took place Nov. 13 at the Mall of America, Bloomington, Minn.
Sara Konz, of King’s County Market, St. Francis, Minn., won first prize and $500 in the “My Winter Wonderland” birthday competition with her sculpted igloo cake. Rhoda Schultz and Mindy Smith, of HyVee, Mankato, Minn., won first place and $1,000 in the “My Royal Wedding” team cake competition with their five-tiered pink and gold cake.
The second place winner of a $250 prize in the birthday competition was Andrea Halleland, Daube's Bakery, Rochester, Minn. Keeann Richards, Jerry’s Foods, Edina, Minn., won third place and $125.
The second place winners of $500 in the wedding cake competition were Jamie VanderWoude and Fhoua Yang-Moua, Byerly's< Golden Valley, Minn. Stephanie Bromander and Kathy Anderson, Byerly's, won third place and $250.
The competition was sponsored by UMBA with allied members, General Mills, DecoPac, Brill, Bakery Crafts, Dawn Foods, Gregory’s Foods and Lindar. UMBA member bakeries Coborn’s and Cold Spring Bakery provided the cake for the contest.
