Weis Markets Inc., Sunbury, Pa., recently announced plans to purchase the Binghamton, N.Y.-based Giant Markets. It expects to complete the purchase by Aug. 21.
Weis will purchase the 12 Giant stores located in Binghamton; Vestal, N.Y.; Endicott, N.Y.; Endwell, N.Y. and Johnson City, N.Y.
“This acquisition is an excellent strategic fit for our company. Giant Markets is the market leader in Broome County, where they have excellent locations, modern stores and a strong market presence,” said Jonathan Weis, Weis Markets' vice chairman. “For many years, they have been a significant part of the community, and they've offered an excellent combination of quality, value and service. We are pleased to be working with their associates and look forward to welcoming them to our organization.
Weis Markets currently operates 154 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia. In 2008, it generated $2.4 billion in sales.
