Uncle Wally's Muffin Co., Shirley, N.Y., introduced Snack'n Write, a product line of cupcakes, muffins, brownies and other baked products designed to meet most federally-mandated school wellness policies. Most home-baked and store-bought products are no longer permitted in schools because of the efforts to combat childhood obesity. Snack'n Write can be sold directly to schools and will be available at retail beginning this month.
Hill and Valley Inc., Rock Island, Ill., introduced chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies in 100-calorie portions. The chocolate chip cookies are sugar-free and contain about 20 percent semi-sweet chocolate, while the oatmeal raisin cookies are no sugar added. Both varieties have 0 g of trans fat. The 12-count package is available in the fresh bakery section in supermarkets.
Flowers Bakeries has reduced the sodium content of its three Nature's® Own Light breads. Nature's Own light wheat and light honey wheat breads now have 25 percent less sodium than regular enriched honey wheat bread. Nature's Own Light Premium white bread now has 25 percent less sodium than traditional enriched white bread. The new breads contain only 40 calories per slice, are low in fat and are excellent sources of fiber. Suggested retail price ranges from $2.29 to $2.49.
Sweet Lilly's, Pennsauken, N.J., added three new flavors to its line of sugar-free and no-sugar added cheesecakes. No-sugar added chocolate chip, Michigan cherry and apple crumb cheesecakes are made with Philadelphia-brand cream cheese and are certified kosher. The cakes are delivered pre-cut and can be divided into 20-slice or 16-slice portions.
Milwaukee-based Hostess launched Twinkies and strawberry cupcakes in 100-calorie packs. Each pack contains three mini-cakes at 2.5 g of fat, with 0 g trans fat. The Twinkies are mini versions of sponge cake with cream filling and the cupcakes have a strawberry cake base with cream cheese icing.
General Mills, Minneapolis, introduced Fiber One® ready-to-eat muffins. Each serving contains 28 percent of the Daily Value (DV) of fiber plus 8 g of whole grains per serving (at least 48 g whole grains DV recommended). Flavors include wild blueberry and oats; banana chocolate chip; mixed fruit, nuts and honey; and apple cinnamon bun. Fiber One muffins will be available nationwide by the end of the year. They are currently being sold at select supermarkets. Frozen club packs also will be available at all Sam's Clubs this month.
