SkillsUSA Championships in Commercial Baking were held June 19-23 in Kansas City, Mo. First place, post-secondary went to Kim Stark, Utah Valley State College, and Krista Burgoyne won first place, secondary.
The competition challenged contestants to meet production and quality criteria consistent with industry standards. Students must scale, mix, prepare and bake six products including breads, rolls, Danish, cookies and pies as well as demonstrate cake decorating skills. They must deliver quality, salable products while working efficiently and under job-like conditions.
The Retail Bakers of America (RBA) is a sponsor of the competition and provided equipment, ingredients and judges. The first place, second place and third place winners receive stipends of $500, $300 and $200 respectively to use towards tuition, books, uniforms, supplies, equipment or other baking/school related expenses.
