As Columbus, Ohio, prepares to celebrate its bicentennial, baking and pastry arts students at Columbus State Community College will compete in a cake design contest for the birthday celebration event on Feb. 10.
On Feb. 9 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, students will design cakes replicating Columbus landmarks. Supermarket chain Giant Eagle donated more than 150 sheet cakes, 500 lbs. of icing and other decorating elements for the project. Professional bakers from Giant Eagle will create one of the landmark cakes and the Official Bicentennial Birthday Cake. Students will design and craft the remaining 31 cakes.
Judging will take place on Feb. 10, and the cakes will be on display during the "200Columbus Bicentennial Birthday Celebration," which will take place at the Battelle Grand Ballroom at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Students with the winning designs will receive scholarship funds to use toward their education.
