An ongoing trend in wedding cakes is for the couple to incorporate some aspect of the bride’s gown into the design. They often request that decorators replicate the ruching, lace or belt detail on the wedding cake. Exact replications can be difficult and expensive, but often just the illusion of the dress detail is enough to create the effect the couple is looking for. This faux lace design uses patterned fondant in common shapes found in lace and makes lace making easy. The key is to replicate the main effects of the lace on the dress: if it has a lot of detail at the top and then less detail as it drapes down, do the same on the cake with a lot of fondant lace at the top and less on the bottom tiers.
